As an agile coach, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day mechanics of Scrum, Kanban, and other frameworks. But if you really want to drive lasting change and success within your organization, it’s essential to go deeper and tap into the power of meaning.

According to Viktor Frankl, a renowned psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, “meaning is the primary motivation in man.” In other words, we all have an innate need to find purpose and meaning in our lives. When we’re able to connect our work to a larger, meaningful goal, we become more motivated, engaged, and productive.



This is especially true in the world of agile coaching, where the focus is on empowering teams and individuals to take ownership of their work and drive results. By helping team members connect their work to a larger purpose, coaches can create a more meaningful and fulfilling work experience.

But how do you actually do this in practice? Here are a few tips:

  1. Start with the why. In his book “Start with Why,” Simon Sinek talks about the importance of starting with your purpose or “why” when communicating with others. As an agile coach, it’s important to clearly articulate the purpose and meaning behind your work, and help team members understand how their contributions fit into the bigger picture.

  2. Encourage self-reflection. Encourage team members to take time for self-reflection and consider what gives their work meaning and purpose. This can be as simple as asking questions like “What makes this work important to you?” or “What impact do you hope to have through your work?”

  3. Help team members find their “flow.” According to positive psychology expert Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, “flow” is a state of optimal experience where we become completely immersed in what we’re doing. By helping team members find their flow, coaches can create a more meaningful and fulfilling work experience.

  4. Foster a culture of meaning. As an agile coach, you have the power to shape the culture of your organization. By fostering a culture of meaning and purpose, you can create a more engaged and motivated workforce.

In the end, it all comes down to tapping into the power of meaning. By helping team members connect their work to a larger purpose, coaches can drive lasting change and success within their organizations. So the next time you’re leading an agile transformation, remember to go beyond the mechanics of the framework and tap into the power of meaning.
