In Marc Danziger's blog on agile transformation, he writes about the importance of being mindful and humble in our approach to change. He suggests that we should think of ourselves as "weavers of change" rather than "forgers of change," and highlights the interconnectedness and complexity of transformation.

I completely agree with this idea, and have experienced firsthand the power of collaboration and adaptability in facilitating positive change. For example, I remember working with a team on an agile transformation project where we were faced with a number of challenges and roadblocks. Initially, we tried to "forge" our way through the obstacles, using a more directive and predetermined approach. However, this approach proved to be ineffective and only served to create more tension and frustration within the team.

It wasn't until we adopted a more mindful and collaborative approach, focusing on bringing different perspectives and approaches together in a cohesive way, that we were able to make real progress. We started to see ourselves as "weavers of change," working together to create a tapestry of transformation that was strong, flexible, and adaptable.

As we reflected on this experience, we realized that our self-limiting beliefs and biases had been holding us back. We had been too focused on a predetermined plan and had failed to consider the needs and perspectives of all stakeholders. By acknowledging and overcoming these biases, we were able to make a much greater impact and facilitate meaningful change.

I believe that this experience is universal and that all of us have the power to make a difference and impact the world around us. By being mindful of our By being mindful of our biases and adopting a collaborative and adaptable approach to change, we can make a positive impact and facilitate meaningful transformation in organizations. So, the next time you're faced with a challenge or obstacle, ask yourself: do you want to be a "weaver of change" or a "forger of change"? The choice is yours.

It's important to recognize that our actions, no matter how small, can have a ripple effect and impact the larger 'fabric'. If we choose to approach change as "weavers of change," focusing on collaboration, adaptability, and mindfulness, we are more likely to create positive and lasting impact.

This approach recognizes the complexity and interconnectedness of the world around us, and seeks to bring different elements together in a cohesive way. It values the contributions and perspectives of all stakeholders and strives to create a tapestry of change that is strong, flexible, and adaptable.

On the other hand, if we approach change as "forgers of change," focusing on a more directive and predetermined approach, we may create unintended consequences and do harm to the larger tapestry. This approach may prioritize short-term gains over long-term sustainability, and may ignore the needs and perspectives of some stakeholders.

Ultimately, the choice of whether to approach change as a "weaver" or a "forger" will depend on the specific context and the goals that we seek to achieve. By considering the impact of our actions on the larger tapestry, we can strive to make a positive and lasting difference.

So what now? Now that you have a better understanding of the impact of your approach to change on the larger tapestry, you may be wondering how to put this knowledge into action. Here are a few steps you can take to make a positive and lasting impact:

  1. Reflect on your own biases and self-limiting beliefs: Take some time to consider the biases and self-limiting beliefs that may be holding you back from making a positive impact. Are there any beliefs that are preventing you from seeing the full potential of your actions?

  2. Consider your approach to change: Think about whether you see yourself as a "weaver of change" or a "forger of change." Which approach do you think would be most effective in your current context?

  3. Take action: Once you have identified any biases or self-limiting beliefs and have considered your approach to change, take action to make a positive impact. This could involve adopting a more mindful and collaborative approach to change, or working to overcome any self-limiting beliefs that may be holding you back.

By following these steps and being mindful of the impact of your actions on the larger tapestry, you can make a positive and lasting difference in the world. So what are you waiting for? Take action today and start weaving your own tapestry of change!
